They say tall tales grow taller
As the years pass along
And this one is no exception
So I thought I’d put it in a song
This story takes place in the country
On a quaint farm near a field of corn
And there’s a dreary lookin' scarecrow
Who leans there withered and torn
Strapped around the scarecrows neck
An old discarded banjo hangs
And when a southern breeze blows in
You can hear that old banjo clang
If the thunderclouds clash above
And lightnin’ comes crashin' down
That ole scarecrow springs to life
And he can make that banjo sound
All of the animals watch in awe
A mystic fog floats through the air
Then the scarecrow softly mutters
“Come closer… if you dare”
Music’s comin’ from the cornfield
The scarecrow’s puttin’ on his show
And the animals come in herds
So they can hear that old banjo
His fingers burst into flames
As they blaze across the frets
Then he'll summon the rain to fall down
Until the straws of his body are wet
Smoke smolders from the old banjo
As the animals watch with delight
Then the storm clouds soon disappear
And return the starlit night
The scarecrow eagerly waits
For the next storm to come along
And when lightnin’ strikes again
He’ll play one more impromptu song
And the animals will watch in awe

I dedicated my song 'Summer Lovin' Good Time' in honor of Charlie Daniels, being that it was released just less than one month of his passing. There's a lot of good fiddle parts in that song, so it seemed appropriate to give a little nod to the man that inspired me to include a fiddle in my songs in the first place. I would like to once again honor him by dedicating 'The Legend of the Scarecrow' in his memory, as well. Charlie was a great storyteller. Not only was I inspired by him as a musician, but he also had a huge influence on me as a lyricist. When it comes to writing words for my country songs, no other one person inspired me more than he did. Thank you, Charlie for all the years you have captivated me with your extraordinary talent.
